The species has been reported to grow in thick stands in the Ulu Gadut area and has been described as the most common wild banana in the region of Mt. Sako (Meijer 1961, Itino et al. 1991, Veldkamp and Sulistyaningsih 2015). However, no numerical population information is available and the current population trend is unknown. Research into population status and trends is therefore recommended.

Given the prevalence of agriculture across its range, it is suspected that suitable habitat for the species is threatened by anthropogenic land use; for example, in 2001, the lowland forests of Sumatra were being deforested at an annual rate of 2.5%, largely to make way for palm oil plantations (CEPF 2001). As such, research is recommended to ascertain the scale of impact of deforestation upon this species. However, no threats thought likely to affect the conservation status of the species have been identified to date.

The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009). One botanical garden is listed as a site of ex situ conservation for this species (BGCI 2019) but there are no known germplasm accessions (Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2019). It is likely to occur in multiple protected areas across its range; passive conservation is presumed in these areas, however, there is no evidence of active management or monitoring of this species (Bachman et al. 2011, Protected Planet 2019).
