Hundreds of individuals were found along the valley and stream around Daoba village (Häkkinen 2011, Chen et al. 2014). It is suspected that the construction of an airfield on the edge of Daoba in 2013 will have had a negative impact on the population, but no further population information is available to verify this. Given the suspected decline since the type collection and observations were made, and the restricted range of the species, research into population status and trends is urgently required.

Häkkinen (2011) notes that the species grows under the canopy of larger trees, therefore the presence of a canopy is inferred to be required for this species to thrive. Within the maximal estimated extent of occurrence for the species, about 1 km2 of tree cover was lost between 2001 and 2018 (GFW 2020). Satellite imagery suggests that this is predominantly attributable to multiple small-scale deforestation events due to small-holder agricultural activities, rather than a single major development. As well as this, since the type collection was made in January 2013 (Chen et al. 2014), satellite imagery portrays the establishment of a large airstrip on the edge of Daoba, with construction consuming about 0.5 km2 of the valley. This development is suspected to present both a past and ongoing threat to the species, owing to the land conversion that took place during construction, and the suspected subsequent increase in road and air transport in the vicinity of Daoba.

The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009). The species has not been collected from any protected areas (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2020). Its wild population grows in close proximity to the Ruili Botanical Garden, but the species was not included in a near-comprehensive whole-genome sequencing project for species present in the botanical garden (Liu et al. 2019). There is one germplasm accession of wild origin held by the Bioversity International Musa Germplasm Transit Centre (ITC) in Belgium (Ruas et al. 2017, Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2020) but it is not known to be conserved ex situ elsewhere (BGCI 2020). Given the suspected precarious status of the wild population, urgent in situ conservation measures are required.
