Häkkinen and Teo (2008) describe the species as very rare. Extensive and targeted expeditions undertaken in 2005, 2006 and 2007 in western Yunnan, where the species was originally discovered, failed to uncover any populations, and it was speculated that wild populations of the species had been lost (Häkkinen and Teo 2008). However, observations of wild plants were made in 2019 in a similar area to where the species was originally discovered (iNaturalist 2020). Although the precise localities of these observations are not clear, they are suspected to have been recorded at fairly separate localities. Given the failure to locate the species in targeted expeditions in this area, it is suspected that the species remains very rare and that the plants observed belong to small subpopulations; in support of this supposition, the reportedly similar species M. chunii and Musa mannii have only been observed growing in small, isolated subpopulations (Häkkinen and Teo 2008, Häkkinen 2009, Sabu et al. 2013, Joe et al. 2014). The species has also been reported from along the state highway in Lohit District of Arunachal Pradesh; expansion of the highway is in evidence and only a single flowering plant has been reported (Ranibala et al. 2018), although this identification requires substantiation. Based on available information and appropriate inference, it is suspected that the global population numbers fewer than 250 individuals, and that the largest subpopulation comprises fewer than 50 plants. As the species was not identified upon return to the area of the type collection by the author of the protologue (Häkkinen and Teo 2008), it is suspected that the wild plants originally observed have been lost; similarly, if only a single mature individual is now growing at the collection locality in Arunachal Pradesh, it is suspected that a larger population was apparent previously. As such, it is inferred that the number of mature individuals is decreasing. Research into population status and trends is needed to confirm these hypotheses, and urgently required as part of wider necessary study into extant wild individuals.

All collections and observations made in Yunnan lie within the Northern Indochina subtropical forests ecoregion, as delineated by Olson et al. (2001). The major threats to biodiversity in this ecoregion are presented by land clearing for shifting cultivation, poppy cultivation, cultivation of rice and cinnamon crops, and logging. Although human population density is low, cultivation in steep and unproductive land accounts for large-scale forest clearing (Carpenter et al. 2001, S. Kallow pers. comm. 2020). The species was originally discovered in western Yunnan in 2003 and was introduced to the western horticulture market soon after its discovery by the TianZi Biodiversity Research and Development Centre (Häkkinen and Teo 2008). In subsequent surveys of the discovery area, the species was not found, and it seems reasonable to hypothesise that wild specimens were also exploited for introduction to the horticulture market. Where the species has been documented in Arunachal Pradesh, it has been found growing along the state highway road which is rapidly expanding (Ranibala et al. 2018); as the species is only known from a single flowering plant at this locality, the threat posed by this land use change is significant. However, as the distribution information for the species is imprecise, it is challenging to evaluate the specific impact of threats to this species. As part of necessary research into the wild population, an evaluation of the threats in action will be required.

The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009). The species has not been collected from any protected areas (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2020). There is one germplasm accession of wild origin held by the Bioversity International Musa Germplasm Transit Centre (ITC) in Belgium (Ruas et al. 2017, Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2020) and one botanical garden is listed as a site of ex situ conservation for this species (BGCI 2020). Given the suspected precarious status of the wild population, in situ area protection and species recovery is urgently required.
