The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009). There are eight M. ornata germplasm accessions of wild origin held worldwide, however, the countries from which these collections were made are not detailed; six accessions are held by the Biodiversity International Musa Germplasm Transit Centre in Belgium and two are held by the Embrapa Mandioca e Fruticultura Tropical in Brazil (Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2019). At least 44 botanical gardens provide sites of ex situ conservation for this species with a precise number obscured by the listing of varietal forms (BGCI 2019). In Bangladesh, it has been collected from the 116.15 km2 Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary and the 77.64 km2 Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary (Huq & Mia, L, #10327, Noltie et al., E, #13). It may be inferred using GeoCAT that the species occurs in additional protected areas across its range; passive conservation is presumed in these areas, however, there is no evidence of active management or monitoring of this species (Bachman et al. 2011, Protected Planet 2019).
