In north-east India, Musa ochracea is very common in the states of Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura (Joe et al. 2013). However, no numerical population information is available and the current population trend is unknown. Research into population status and trends is therefore recommended.

In areas of northeast India, deforestation and degradation of forest habitat is ongoing (Chatterjee 2008). However, the impact of this upon Musa ochracea is not known, especially as it is able to persist in disturbed areas (Joe et al. 2013). Further research is required to establish whether there are any threats in action that may directly impact the species.

The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009). The species is not known to occur in any protected areas (Protected Planet 2019). According to Joe et al. (2013), live germplasm has been established at the Calicut University Botanical Garden. It is not known to be conserved ex situ elsewhere (BGCI 2019, Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2019). As such, the gathering of germplasm material from wild populations across its full range is still recommended for ex situ conservation. Based on several years of field observations, Joe et al. (2013) ascribe a conservation status of Least Concern to the species.
