The species is quite common on the slopes from Salangam to Tidding, with scattered subpopulations between the settlements of Hayuliang and Mataliang on the way to Chaglagam (Gogoi and Borah 2013). The subpopulation at Poting is not as large as those in Lohit and Anjaw districts. The species has only been collected from a limited number of localities across its extent of occurrence, and thus is it considered unlikely that the global population is very large; however, the overall population size is not known. The current population trend is inferred to be stable as no major ongoing threats have been identified and the species grows in largely inaccessible areas; however, research into population status and trends is recommended, given the restricted distribution of the species.

Markku's banana typically grows on inaccessible slopes in a region where the forest is well preserved and true representation of climax vegetation (BirdLife International 2020); no major ongoing threats to the population have been identified, and the population trend is inferred to be stable. However, where it grows at lower altitudes, a plausible future threat to the species is presented by road widening and subsequent clearing of primary forest for agricultural purposes (R. Gogoi pers. comm. 2020). Given the restricted range of this species, these potential threats should be closely monitored, especially if there is evidence of their migration to higher altitudes.

The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009). It is not known to occur within any protected areas (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2020). The species is growing at the Arunachal Pradesh Regional Center Botanic Garden in Itanagar as part of an ex situ conservation programme facilitated by the Botanical Survey of India (R. Gogoi pers. comm. 2020).
