Despite botanical surveys taking place in the areas of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh (Häkkinen and Väre 2008), the species was only re-discovered in the wild in 2011 (Joe et al. 2014), suggesting that it may be rare. Where the species has been collected in 9 mile, near Namdang, it has been collected from only one site with two groups of 10 plants in a clump (Joe et al. 2014). The authors describe the species as very rare and were unable to collect it from elsewhere in the northeastern states of India (Joe et al. 2014, Joe and Sabu 2016). Gogoi and Borah (2014) also attest to its threatened status at the collection locality at the Namdang check gate. Lacking further numerical population information, it is hypothesised that the other subpopulations are of similar composition and number approximately 20 plants each. As such, the global population is suspected to number fewer than 250 individuals, and possibly fewer than 50 individuals, with no more than 50 plants in any one subpopulation. However, with no numerical population information available for the locality at Namdang check gate, nor for the possible subpopulations at Diyun, Miao and Chowkham, it is difficult to conclude this with certainty. Research into the global trend for the species, as well as the status of these other subpopulations, is required.

The species has been collected in a small forest patch surrounded by tea plantations and some tribal colonies; clearing of hills for cultivation and tea plantations could lead to its extirpation from this locality (Joe et al. 2014). Rapid clearing of forests and widening of roads is evident in the vicinity of Namdang (Gogoi and Borah 2014). Over 10% of tree cover has been lost in the area between Namtok and Namdang between 2001 and 2018 (GFW 2019).

The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009). One germplasm accession of wild origin is held by the Bioversity International Musa Germplasm Transit Centre in Belgium and two further accessions may also represent this species but require taxonomic verification (Ruas et al. 2017, Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2019). Twenty botanical gardens are listed as sites of ex situ conservation for this species (BGCI 2019) but the species has been observed to struggle in ex situ conditions (Joe et al. 2014). The species has not been collected from any protected areas (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2019). Joe et al. (2014) recommended that the species be categorised as Critically Endangered using IUCN Red List Criteria and this was also the listing proposed by Häkkinen and Väre (2008) if the species were found in the wild.
