État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
The population and trend of this species is unknown, it was first collected in 1912. It has been suggested that all Musa insularimontana collections from the island since this date have not been of this species (P. Markey pers. comm. 2017). With this limited information it is inferred that there would potentially be less than 50 mature individuals on the island. Further surveys are needed to find out if this banana is or is not growing on the island.

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
Nuclear waste has been stored on the island since 1982, though it is not known if this waste posses a risk to this species. This species should be monitored to make sure this waste does not threaten the habitat and population of this banana.

Further surveys are needed to see if this species is extant on the island, as well as surveys on the ecology of the island. Around 80% of the island is covered by primary forests, with only small scale logging by the indigenous population (Chen and Tso 2004), it is inferred that the forest habitat of the island is stable, due to the very small amount of logging which could impact on the habitat.
The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009).
