It is suspected that the population of Musa coccinea in the wild has declined, given that it was historically recorded from the provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan in China (Wu and Raven 2000) but is now thought to be extinct in the wild in China and much of northern Vietnam (Liu et al. 2002, Häkkinen et al. 2012). Häkkinen (2010) postulates that the subpopulation in Pu Mat National Park may be one of the last wild subpopulations in the world, although collections have been recorded from two further Vietnamese localities since 2000 (Harder et al., MO, #7700;  Bui et al., B, #143). Given its rarity and suspected decline, research is urgently required to establish the population status of the species in the wild.

In China, the reason attributed to the decline of this banana is anthropogenic impact (Liu et al. 2002); however, the specifics of this impact are not detailed. Given its popularity in living collections and as an ornamental plant (Häkkinen et al. 2012), it is suspected that over-collection of the species may represent a major threat. In both southern China and Vietnam, total forest cover has decreased over the last 20-50 years (Fang et al. 2001, Butler 2019) so loss of habitat is also likely to have contributed to its decline. However, the major drivers behind this habitat loss are not clear.

The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009). There are four M. coccinea germplasm accessions of wild origin held worldwide: one is held by the Millennium Seed Bank and was collected from a wild population in Vietnam; the remaining accessions are held by the Biodiversity International Musa Germplasm Transit Centre in Belgium, however, the country from which these collections were made is not detailed (Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2019). Thirty-two botanical gardens are listed as sites of ex situ conservation for this species (BGCI 2019). M. coccinea has been recorded from two protected areas in Vietnam: the 935.24 km2 Pu Mat National Park, which falls within the Tay Nghe An UNESCO-MAB Biosphere Reserve, and the 374.87 km2 Bach Ma National Park (Protected Planet 2019).
