The population distribution, size and trend for this species remains largely unknown and more research is needed. Wild populations are still commonly seen despite massive land clearing, which restrict the natural habitat (Hakkinen et al. 2005).

There are no specific threats known to this species. However, there are threats to its habitat from deforestation within Borneo due to illegal logging and palm oil development (Johnson 2012). More research is needed to ascertain the impact this might have on the species.

As part of the Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change, Crop Wild Relative project (Dempewolf et al. 2014), seed is being collected in Malaysia and stored ex situ and at the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership, Kew.

According to Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI 2017) this species has six living collections in botanical gardens worldwide, although the size of the collections are not detailed in this resource. There are three germplasm accessions held in Belgium of this species (Genesys 2017). Active in situ conservation and complimentary ex situ collection is recommended for this species.

This species' native distribution overlaps within protected areas in Borneo, inferred using GeoCAT (Bachman et al. 2011) and so passive conservation is presumed in this area. However, there is no evidence of active management or monitoring of this species.
