There are no known specific threats to this species. However, in the region of Assam the cultivation of Juhm has depleted habitat. The Government, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and other NGOs are supporting various in situ and ex situ conservation programmes (FAO 2006).

The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009).

As part of the Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change, Crop Wild Relative project (Dempewolf et al. 2014), seed is being collected and stored ex situ and at the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership, Kew. Twenty-two accessions are held at the MSBP with three held in Belgium (Genesys 2017).

According to Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI 2017) this species has seven living collection in botanical gardens worldwide, although the size of the collections are not detailed in this resource.
