This species is only known from a single population observed at Bukit Berlumut, Sarawak in 2005. At the time, the species was described as extremely rare and at risk of extinction (Häkkinen 2005) but the population size was not documented. Extensive studies in the area failed to identify any further subpopulations and the plant was strange to local people (Häkkinen 2005); in survey work undertake in 2018 in the area of the type locality, the species was not identified, nor within a 1 km radius of the site (K. Meekiong pers. comm. 2021). As the species has only been recorded at this locality, a decreasing population trend is inferred. It is possible that no mature individuals remain extant; if any mature individuals do remain, it is likely that the population would be very small.

In the hills surrounding Bukit Berlumut, about 25% of forest cover has been lost between 2001–2018. Commodity-driven deforestation represents the dominant driver of tree cover loss with multiple wood fibre concessions, as well as a logging concession, overlapping the range (GFW 2019). The impact of deforestation on this species is likely to be heightened by its intolerance towards growth in open exposure (Hotta 1987). Upon description of the species in 2005, Häkkinen raised concerns around extinction risk; this will only have been exacerbated by accelerated rates of tree cover loss since 2010 (GFW 2019) and the status of the species in the wild must be assumed to be highly precarious, especially as no individuals were identified in the vicinity of the type collection following survey work in 2018 (K. Meekiong pers. comm. 2021).

The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009). The species is not known from any protected areas (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2019) and it is not known to be conserved ex situ elsewhere (Ruas et al. 2017, BGCI 2019, Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2019). As such, gathering of wild germplasm material for ex situ conservation from any remaining extant wild plants is a conservation priority.
