État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
Del Risco and Morell (1984) studied plants at five localities and they estimated that there were 10-25 plants per locality. In 1996/7, Pena Garcia et al., studied plants at 17 sites and their study included 540 plants. The largest locality had 124 plants present. Julio Lazcano (pers. comm.) undertook a Masters research project at Vinales National Park and counted 1,200 individuals in his study. Lazcano (pers. comm.) estimated that there were 1,540 documented plants in Cuba. The subpopulation at Loma el Corcho is well known and has 13-15 plants and has shown a 90% decline in the last 50 years. However, this subpopulation is in the most heavily transformed part of the range and overall estimates of decline across the range are closer to 20% over 50 years (Gonzalez-Oliva et al. 2014). While there are reported to be >1,000 individuals of this species, the Red List assessment focuses on mature individuals capable of reproduction and Gonzalez-Oliva et al. (2014) estimate that the number of mature individuals to be < 250, with no subpopulation containing more than 26 mature individuals.

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
The plants are affected by habitat destruction/fragmentation (moderate) and over collecting of plants from the wild. Reproductive failure (pollinator extinction) is a concern, although this still needs to be verified. Mechanical damage to stems has also been reported in several localities (Peña Garcia et al. 1996/7).
