The population size for this species is not known. But thought to be distributed over about 15 isolated subpopulations. Rounds (2007) estimates that there had been a reduction of the natural population distribution and size by 50% by unsustainable harvesting for thatch and palm-hearst; the time frame for this decline is 80-100 years

The decrease in the species has been primarily through drainage of coastal swamps and clearing of coastal forests for agriculture, gardens and pastures (Morrison et al. 2012), and vacation homes and development (Pacific Harbour). This has lead to an increase in weeds and creepers, as well as increased fire risk in the dry season. Within the last few decades, however, the species has been impacted by further large scale drainage projects, residential developments, the increased used of the species for the palm-heart trade, as well as unsustainable leaf harvest for thatching in the tourism industry.

NatureFiji-MareqetiViti is working with partners in developing the Soga Sustainable Harvesting and Conservation Project which aims to conserve the species whilst still sustain a rural industry. An ex situ subpopulation (about 200 individuals) was planted in the Garrick reserve in 2009.  A Fiji Sago Palm Recovery Plan has been agreed by all stakeholders and endorsed by the Department of Environment, There has also been training and awareness, as well as successful restoration of 10 ha at one site (Culanuku). However, additional conservation action is needed including: the need for a permit system to ensure sustainable harvesting of Soga, recognition for sustainable harvesters and further restoration at other sites.
