Description complète des menacesExpert
Upemba National Park faces a number of challenges. With conflict and unrest across the country, poaching has been a problem in the park (Vanleeuwe 2008, Hance 2012). There have been reports of extensive burning of Mesanthemum angustitepalum habitat by poachers to drive animals out of the grassland and provide better vegetation for grazing (Muir 2008). With more frequent fires, we can expect a decline in the wetland habitat that this species relies on. Illegal settlements are known to be present, although these are thought to be located in lower elevation areas (Hance 2012). In 2008, there were 9 small-scale coltan and casterite mines known to be operating illegally in the South of the park (Muir 2008). Data from Global Forest Watch suggests that these mines may have less of an impact on the higher elevation habitat of M. angustitepalum (Global Forest Watch 2016).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
The species occurs within Upemba National Park. Park rangers are working to protect the park against illegal activities such as mining and poaching, but conflict and lack of resources make conservation efforts difficult (Save Upemba 2017). The focus of much of the conservation work in this park is on animals and there is little information on the current state of Mesanthemum angustitepalum.
