Marantochloa grandiflora

Marantochloa grandiflora is threatened by activities linked with logging that induce a decline in the extent and quality of its habitat, since it is known from a forest concession. It could also be threatened by hydro-electric projects, since a planned project is currently under construction less than 500 m away from one of its known occurrences.

Marantochloa grandiflora is known from the Monts de Cristal National Park in Gabon. However, since the species is threatened by logging, various conservation measures should be considered. First, it should be sought in other places, to increase knowledge of its full distribution. Second, it should be regarded as an HCV1 species (High Conservation Value), and as a consequence should be included in the management plan of the industrial concessions within which it occurs. Third, it should be included in the list of protected species of Gabon, and the degradation or loss of its habitat must therefore be avoided. Finally, a public awareness campaign must be conducted targeting industrial companies and other private actors, NGOs, scientific institutions, and the government of Gabon to ensure that Marantochloa grandiflora is taken into consideration when decisions are made that could impact its conservation.
