État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
No quantitative population data are available for Mapania jongkindii. Nevertheless, as it is morphologically close to M. linderi Hutch. ex Nelmes, it has probably been overlooked during past botanical inventories. It is also possible that historical collections were overlooked in botanical institutions. It is probable that future inventories targeting all species of Mapania will lead to the discovery of additional individuals and subpopulations. As large populations of M. jongkindii were not found, it is assumed that the species is a naturally rare plant with scattered individuals. A similar situation occurs in respect to M. rhynchocarpa Lorougnon & J.Raynal, where isolated individuals, rather than populations, are found in a particular locality (Mesterházy 2017).

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
Two occurrences of Mapania jongkindii are threatened by small-scale agriculture, as seen on Google Earth, which shows patches of cleared forest visible next to known subpopulations, which induces habitat loss and a reduction in habitat quality. Moreover, one occurrence (Jongkind #12674) is located in a gold mine concession, and is threatened by mining activities that could lead to its disappearance. The Nimba subpopulation is also threatened by a now inoperative mining project, that has led to a past decline in its habitat quality.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
Since Mapania jongkindii is threatened by mining activities and small-scale agriculture, various conservation measures should be considered. First, it should be sought in other places, such as the Guinean and the Ivorian part of the Nimba Mountains, and the Gola Forest National Park in Liberia to increase knowledge of its full distribution. Second, it should be regarded as an HCV1 (High Conservation Value), and as a consequence should be included in the management plan of the industrial concessions within which it occurs. Third, it should be included in the Liberian's list of protected species, and the degradation or loss of its habitat must therefore be avoided. Fourth, ex situ conservation should be tested, both within Liberia, and internationally. Finally, a public awareness campaign must be conducted targeting industrial companies and other private actors, NGOs, scientific institutions, and the government of Liberia to ensure that M. jongkindii is taken into consideration when decisions are made that could impact its conservation.
