No numerical population information is available, however, this species has been cited as characteristic of or abundant in lowland swamp forests, sometimes gregarious and dominant (Kern 1974). In a recent survey of Chek Jawa, Singapore, it is noted to be locally frequent in coastal forest (Lees et al. 2003). Based on the loss of swamp forest within its range the overall population trend is inferred to be decreasing.

There has been extensive forest loss over a number of years within the range of this species with forestry activity and expansion of agriculture, for example, oil palm plantations, being the main drivers. It is considered to be Critically Endangered in Singapore (Kwek et al. 2009) and urban expansion appears to be a major threat here. Draining and burning of peat swamp forests is a significant threat to the habitat in Borneo.

This species is recorded from protected areas, for example, Pulau Ubin, Singapore a designated conservation site with some conservation initiatives in place (Teo 2014, BirdLife International 2015), Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Singapore, Bukit Baka-Bukit Raya National Park in Kalimantan (from specimen data), Eastern Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary, Sarawak (Shabdin et al. 2013).
