Bins and Meek (2008) sampled plots throughout the range of Macrozamia johnsonii. Based on these data, the population was estimated to be ca. 3.5 million mature plants.
The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act in Australia noted that approximately 59% of the total population of Macrozamia johnsonii is thought to occur in State Forest, 30% in National Park, and 11% on private land (Binns and Meek 2008). Of the population present in State Forests 44% is estimated to be contained within logging exclusion zones (E. Robinson in litt. Jan 2011), resulting in an estimated 33% of the total population of M. johnsonii being potentially harvestable from State Forests and 11% from private land. Due to physical and economic constraints the actual area harvested is usually less than the potential harvest area, with modelling of previous forestry activity predicting that between 21% and 32% of M. johnsonii habitat in State Forests will be logged in the next 100 years (E. Robinson in litt. Jan 2011). The overall estimates for decline across the entire population ranged between 5% and 13%.

This species is listed in Appendix II of CITES. Up to 59% of the area where Macrozamia johnsonii occurs falls within state forest where timber harvest (the main threat) is not allowed. Subpopulations are also found in the Chaelundi National Park. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of populations will support the conservation of this species.
