This species is co-dominant with Nothofagus alpina in south-central Chile where it occupies 1.2 million hectares (Echeverría et al. 2004). There is no further population information for this species.

This species is threatened by habitat loss as forest is converted into Pinus plantations. Forest is also cleared for the expansion of agriculture. The species is also potentially at risk from logging for the timber trade and from human set fires.

This species is reported in 66 ex situ collections (BGCI 2017). It is found within protected areas and cultivation within the UK has been trialed.
