Nothofagus menziesii is a widespread, common species ranging from Mt Te Aroha, North Island to Southland, South Island (Wardle 1984, Wardle 1991). The species is dominant forming its own distinct forest association. Population is at its greatest in riparian situations and in sites of high rainfall. As such the species is absent from much of the drier eastern side of the North and South Island and dominant in the west or in sites where local topography ensures higher precipitation (Wardle 1984, Wardle 1991).

Nothofagus menziesii has historically been threatened by its use for timber which may have resulted in some of the sporadic, isolated stands of trees now found on the South Island (Wardle 1966, Wardle 1984). The species also shows poor regeneration after logging (Wardle 1966).

Nothofagus menziesii is found in 22 ex situ collections (BGCI 2017). The species is considered not threatened under non-IUCN criteria in New Zealand (de Lange et al. 2012).
