Lithocarpus kawakamii occurs in a number of subpopulations throughout Taiwan, Province of China (although it is still relatively rare in occurrence there). The region has seen extensive deforestation and habitat conversion for agriculture and urbanization. Some sites outside protected areas may no longer hold subpopulations of this species.
