The population size is estimated to be 150-200 individuals in Manzhou township, with likely fewer than 50 mature individuals. The species is found in a clumped distribution. There has been no genetic research conducted on the population. Based on Center for Tropical Forest Science (CTFS) research, the population size within a monitored plot decreased from 102 individuals in 1990 to 85 individuals in 2013.

The fruit is heavily collected for cultivation in private collections. Seeds exhibit high mortality due to insect infestation and observation of wildlings is rare. The species is also threatened through restrictive climate conditions in its mountain habitat.

The species is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on Taiwan Red List 2017 (Editorial Committee 2017). The entire population exists within Kenting National Park. The species is known in a single ex situ collection and is part of a phenology monitoring and research program managed by National Chaiyi University. Research on propagation methods are currently ongoing. Development of further ex situ collections is recommended.
