Lithocarpus echinophorus occurs in a number of subpopulations in China, Thailand, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Viet Nam. The region has seen extensive deforestation and habitat conversion for agriculture (rice, rubber, corn), extensive cattle ranching, road construction and urbanization. Some sites outside protected areas may no longer hold subpopulations of this species.
