Lithocarpus areca occurs in a number of subpopulations in northern Viet Nam and Guangxi (China). The region has seen extensive deforestation (logging) and habitat conversion for agriculture (rubber, bananas), road construction and urbanization. Sites outside protected areas may no longer hold subpopulations of this species.
