In 1957, the taxon was reported to be common, in wet savannas of the summit of Sierra de la Neblina, between 1,900 and 2,100 m asl (Smith and Downs 1974, Oliva-Esteve and Steyermark 1987). However precise data about the size and dynamics of the population are unknown.

More than 50% of the state of Amazonas is under protection and the population density remains very low, however, human impact has recently considerably increased in the region. All commercial logging activities and mining activities have been legally banned in the Venezuelan Amazon but the local population does not support this prohibition and illegal activities are rampant. Large scale deforestation by burning, road building and tourism are other threats to the natural habitats (Hubber 2001, Schipper et. al. 2001, Grober and Huber 2007). Due to the inaccessibility of both the steep slopes and high summits of the Tepui Mountains, much of the natural habitat is intact. However, illegal gold mining is taking place in the lowlands of the park in Venezuela and neighbouring Brazil. Human-induced fires at the base of the mountains have destroyed vegetation in extensive areas. Fires can reach the forest and rock outcrops on the slopes or even the summits. After fires, heavy rains may remove the soil substratum in crevices and ledges preventing recolonization of the native flora. Many Bromeliaceae appear to be sensitive to fires (Benzing 2000, Versieux and Wanderley 2007). Hobbyists and commercial collectors pose a threat (Huber 2000). The international trade of Bromeliads has rapidly expanded and has promoted increasing collection pressures on natural populations of several species (Read 1989, Benzing 2000).

There are no known conservation measures specifically for this species , however the species has been collected within the Serrania La Neblina National Park, the southern most National Park of Venezuela, covering an area of approximately 13,600 km2, created in 1978. This mountain system appears to have the highest richness of plants species of all tepuis, and is the massif with the highest degree of plant species endemism in the Guyana shield, which was one of the main reason for establishing the park. However in 2001, this park still did not have a management plan. Additionally, conservation efforts may be hindered by difficulty of access, difficulty in regular patrolling of large areas, a lack of adequate personnel, low acceptance of protected areas by the native population, corruption, and the presence of Guerilla in the region (FARC) (Huber 2001). Savannas on summits and plateaus of the Sierra de la Neblina should be surveyed to determine the current range and population size for this species. Samples of seed of this taxon should be collected and stored as an ex situ conservation measure.
