The River Jepre and Jamur Lake area mostly appear to have large areas of continuous forest on satellite imagery. The major threat in the region is a plausible impact from logging concessions which may become active in the future. Global Forest Watch (2023) data shows that there are currently small amounts of forest loss in the area, primarily along roads. The largest threat to biodiversity in the Mount Jaya area is the Grasberg gold and copper mine. The open cast pit is located above 3,800 m asl, a significantly higher elevation than the zone where this species occurs (the maximum recorded elevation is 100 m asl). However, the mining activities extend beyond the pit itself, including increased human disturbance, particularly along the mine roads (Utteridge and Edwards 2009). The Timika area at about 100 metres asl where this species was recorded shows considerable forest loss associated with the expansion of the town. There is also an oil palm concession (owned by PT Freeport Indonesia) to the north of Timika which is not yet active according to satellite imagery. The record from 1913 from the Utakwa Expedition is also from the southern side of Mount Jaya, but is about 37 km eastwards from Timika, where there are no obvious threats.

The three modern collections of this species (collected 1998–2001) are from localities outside protected areas. The specimen collected in 1913 is from a site inside the Lorentz National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 2.35 million Ha (IUCN 2020), but there are no recent records due to a lack of botanical surveying in the area. Licuala grandiflora is not found in any ex situ collections (BGCI 2023).
