The global average density for Geoffroy's Cat is 0.69 individuals/km², an estimation based on the regional studies cited above. Densities vary considerably, as indicated by the high value of standard deviation (0.86 individuals/km²). The population of mature individuals was calculated using the equation d*A*p (IUCN Standards and Petitions Committee 2024), where d represents the average population density (d = 0.69 individuals/km²), A is the area of suitable habitat (based on current polygon of species distribution, A = 3,443,787 km²), and p is the proportion of mature, actively reproductive individuals. Field and genetic data from studies on resident populations (Tirelli et al. 2018, 2023) were used to estimate that 22% of the population consists of mature individuals (p = 0.22). Thus, the global population of mature Geoffroy's Cats is estimated to be approximately 528,012 individuals. We also did the same calculation using the lowest estimation across all ranges of species (0.03 individuals/km² from Alianza del Pastizal et al. 2024) and the number of mature individuals was 22,729, which is, for example, more than double the maximum number of mature individuals for the Vulnerable Category under Criterion C.
We currently lack information on the global population trend. However, it is important to note that the only region where population estimates have been conducted twice in the past decade is the Brazilian Pampa. Both studies were carried out within a 40 km radius. In the first estimate (2015, Tirelli et al. 2019), the population density was reported at 0.34-0.42 individuals/km², whereas in the most recent estimate (2023-2024, Alianza del Pastizal et al. 2024), the density dropped to 0.03-0.13 individuals/km². These estimates indicate a 79.1% reduction over three generations (with each generation spanning 5 years). To accurately assess population trends in the next evaluation, it is crucial to conduct density studies in areas where previous estimates were made, in the other countries inside the species distribution range.

Habitat destruction, including deforestation for agriculture and cattle farming, is an issue, particularly in Bolivia and Brazil, where extensive natural habitats are set to clear land for soybean cultivation and cattle ranching (Nogales-Ascarrunz et al. 2024, MapBiomas 2023). In Brazil, the species is the most frequently killed felid due to roadkill, particularly in the restricted Pampas biome, which constitutes only 2.07% of Brazil's territory (Grillo et al. 2018, IBGE/MMA 2004). Geoffroy's Cat is also frequently confiscated from the illegal pet trade in Bolivia (Nogales-Ascarrunz et al. 2024). In Argentina, roadkill and retaliatory hunting are among major threats, for example, with road mortality accounting for 15% and hunting for 12% of deaths in Entre Ríos province (Muzzachiodi and Sabattini 2022). According to Medrano-Vizcaíno et al. (2021), spatial predictions indicate higher road mortality rates across eastern Brazil, Uruguay, central and eastern Argentina, and southern Chile, which significantly overlap with a substantial portion of Geoffroy's Cat distribution range. Data on roadkill from studies conducted in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay (Koenemann 2009, Attademo et al. 2011, González-Calderón 2020, Coitiño et al. 2021) and from the National Road Systems of each of these countries indicate an annual population loss of 4,357 individuals due to roadkill, with an annual roadkill rate of 0.01%, and a loss per generation (5 years) is 4.36% of population of Geoffroy's Cat.
Furthermore, conflicts with humans, including retaliatory killings in response to poultry and livestock predation (this latter as a response of livestock predation due to larger carnivores), are a concern in Chile, Argentina and Brazil (Peters et al. 2016, Guzmán-Marín et al. 2022, N. Lagos, pers. comm. 2024).
Disease transmission from free-ranging domestic dogs and cats further threatens Geoffroy's Cat populations. Studies have documented exposure to various infectious agents, including canine distemper virus (CDV), feline coronavirus (FCoV), and Toxoplasma gondii, and parasitic infections in Bolivia, Brazil, and Argentina (Beldomenico et al. 2005, Fiorello et al. 2007, Uhart et al. 2012, Souza et al. 2021, Fagundes-Moreira et al. 2024). A case in Bolivia involved a kitten that contracted feline panleukopenia after being kept in captivity, highlighting the risks posed by domestic animals (GCWG and Senda Verde, P. Novales, pers. comm. 2024; Robles-Pinto et al. 2023). Additionally, hybridization with Leopardus guttulus has been observed, with hybrids showing greater tolerance to habitat disturbance, potentially threatening the genetic integrity of L. geoffroyi (Sartor et al. 2021). Recent studies have also raised concerns about the presence of multidrug-resistant bacteria in wild Geoffroy's Cats, possibly linked to human activities and environmental contamination (Oliveira de Araújo et al. 2020, Toigo 2024). Climate change is expected to exacerbate these challenges, with potential impacts on prey availability, habitat suitability and in the genetic structure of the species (Canepuccia et al. 2008, Pereira et al. 2014, Fameli et al. 2024).

This assessment highlights several key areas that require attention. As outlined in the Population section, it is crucial to monitor the species' population trends through long-term density studies at consistent locations over multiple years. Additionally, there is a need to improve our understanding of the species' natural history. A more comprehensive understanding of the threats to Leopardus geoffroyi is also necessary. This includes expanding roadkill monitoring efforts across various regions within the species' range, improving data collection on retaliatory killings and individuals killed by domestic dogs, and conducting further research on disease transmission and its impacts on the species. Conservation measures should account for the observed genetic structure and differences in climatic niches to preserve the species' evolutionary potential (Fameli et al. 2024).
The Geoffroy’s Cat Working Group (GCWG), established in 2020, unites conservationists and researchers across the species' entire distribution range. Acting as a coalition, the GCWG leads conservation and research initiatives aimed at protecting Leopardus geoffroyi. These efforts include activities such as repairing or constructing predator-proof chicken coops, implementing mitigation measures to reduce roadkill, neutering and vaccinating domestic cats and dogs, and engaging local communities (e.g. Tirelli et al. 2024). GCWG partners conduct projects that cover the species' full geographic range, including Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile. Additionally, Leopardus geoffroyi is a target species in Brazil's National Action Plan for Small Wild Cats.
