État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
Strahm (1989) counted around 350–450 trees confined to Anse Quitor, Riviere Cocos, Baie aux Huitres (many planted), Vainquer, Port Sud-Est, Riviere Banane, Riviere Baleine, Bassin Banane (=Vainquer?). In addition little regeneration was seen and the vast majority of these trees had all their lower leaves cut off.
Wiehe (1949) called it "common everywhere" and Balfour (1879) noted "found in every part of the island", adding "Perhaps no plant on the island is put to more uses than the latanier".
Early accounts all mentioned the Latania verschaffeltii as being extremely common and useful. Today the plant is still widely used but has become much rarer. In a Rodrigues red-listing workshop conducted in 2019, participants counted 111 trees in 15 sites (six locations, sensu IUCN).

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
There is almost no evidence of regeneration, due to rats, grazing by cattle and competition from invasive alien plants such as Latania verschaffeltii.
Harvesting of leaves for use as thatch is not controlled, despite regulations.
Latania loddigessii from Mauritius are grown at Baie aux Huitres and may hybridise the Rodriguan endemic Latania verschaffeltii. Precautions should also be taken by botanical gardens growing more than one Latania species.
Cyclones also pose a risk to adult trees on Rodrigues.
The expansion of the airport in 2022 may adversely affect some of the trees in the Plaine Corail region (e.g. Anse Quitor).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
Latania verschaffeltii is maintained in the Anse Quitor Nature Reserve through weeding of invasive alien plants such as Lantana camara, Pongamia pinnata and Acacia nilotica. Seeds are sometime collected at several sites for propagation in nurseries and for reintroduction or for ornamental planting.
The species is grown in botanical gardens and worldwide. However, there is the threat of hybridisation with other latanias on Rodrigues and elsewhere.
