The population is declining. In South Africa, between 10% and 20% of the population is inferred to have been lost since 2002 as a result of overgrazing by livestock and mining. Globally, this translates to a past loss of less than 5%. The proposed development footprint for the green hydrogen strategic economic development zone (Boegoebaai) includes at least half of the known South African subpopulations. By 2032, this situation will likely result in a loss of between 50% and 60% of South Africa's population, which translates to between 10–15% of the global population. A new subpopulation was discovered close to Lekkersing in 2023, with several thousand plants. In Namibia, this species is more widespread and common. Tourism and mining activities in Bogenfels, Oranjemund and Rosh Pinah are inferred to have caused  a low level of past decline. The northern portion of the population that falls in the Pomona region of the Sperrgebiet  is also expected to be lost to green hydrogen development. Overall, a population reduction of between 20–25% will be experienced over a shifting time period starting from 2002 and ending in 2032 (generation length 30 years).

In South Africa, it is threatened by severe, ongoing habitat loss and degradation resulting from open-cast mining along the coast between Alexander Bay and Kleinsee, and also inland along the lower Gariep Valley to Sendelingsdrif. Subpopulations on the western plains of the Richtersveld are also threatened by habitat degradation and trampling as a result of severe overstocking of communal rangelands, which has led to a loss of shrub cover, plant species diversity and erosion. The Boegoebaai Port development project being planned for implementation over the next 10 years, which will include the construction of a port for deep sea vessels, railway line and several refineries for oil and other minerals as well as extensive renewable energy facilities to power a green hydrogen plant, is suspected to result in ongoing habitat loss. In Namibia, mining and tourism activities have led to some population decline in the past, the development of green hydrogen plants and associated renewables in the Pomona region of the Sperrgebiet is projected to cause habitat loss to the northern portion of this species population.

This species is not protected by any provincial, national or international legislation in either country of occurrence. The subpopulations in Namibia fall within the Tsau //Khaeb (Sperrgebiet) National Park. The Tsau //Khaeb (Sperrgebiet) National Park has a ten year (2020/2021 – 2029/2030) management plan which includes monitoring of biodiversity, although this is not one of the species that is monitored on a regular basis. It also occurs within the Richtersveld National Park in South Africa. Unfortunately mining is taking place within this park and future renewable energy projects are planned for the Tsau //Khaeb (Sperrgebiet) National Park. This species has been included in the genebank of Namibia. According to the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI 2024) website, it is represented in two botanical gardens. Seed collections have also been made from wild plants in Richtersveld Desert Botanical Garden.
