The number of individuals of L. acutiflorum is not known but the species is reported to be common in disturbed areas (Sunderland 2012).

There are no major threats to this species across its very large distribution range, although it may be locally threatened by habitat loss. For example, in Ghana, the species is known to be threatened by continuing decline of its natural habitat (Ouattara et al. 2015).

This rattan palm's distribution range includes four protected areas: the Campo Ma'an and Takamanda National Parks in Cameroon, the Banco National Park in Côte d'Ivoire and the Cross River National Park in Nigeria. In addition, the species is found in two ex situ conservation collections (BGCI 2016).
