Kihansia lovettii

The saprophyte was collected from a forest located in the Kihansi gorge downstream of the main waterfall. The main river was diverted in 1999 for production of electricity. The diversion reduced the flow of the river in the gorge from 16.5 cubic meters per second to the current 1.5 cubic meters per second. This has affected the moisture regime in the gorge and some of the trees are dying. The Kihansi gorge and its associated wetlands in the only habitat known for the Extinct in the Wild Kihansi Spray Toad. Most of the effort to improve the habitat is focused on the wetlands but not on the forest (which support the saprophyte).

The area where the species is found is protected as Njerera Forest Reserve. However, this is an area where most of the footprint for Lower Kihansi Hydro Power station is located.
