État de la populationExpert
According to a 2009 review by NatureServe (2014), there are approximately 90 extant occurrences of the species across its range (only fourteen occurrences are believed to have excellent or good viability), with an additional 27 considered historical, and three extirpated. It is a rare species, with only a few occurrences containing more than 1,000 species (all in New Jersey where the species reaches its greatest abundance); many occurrences are small and contain fewer than 25 individuals. Its total global population is estimated to be between 15,000 to 30,000, with a "short-term" and "long-term" population trend likely to be declining by more than 30%, and possibly >50% (NatureServe 2014).

In Canada the population was estimated to be between 5,000 and 10,000 in 2004 (which comprises a significant proportion of the global population), and while the species is believed to have been extirpated from one site, surveys in 2002 found no evidence of a decline since previous surveys in 1992 (COSEWIC 2004, 2015). There are a number of historical records for this species in the United States suggesting that it was more widely spread in the past than it is today (COSEWIC 2004). The species is classed as globally 'Imperiled' by NatureServe (2014), and the populations in the USA and Canada are also classed as nationally 'Imperiled'. The Canadian Endangered Species Conservation Council (CESCC) also class the species as 'Sensitive' (for Canada only).

Description complète des menacesExpert
The species is highly threatened by land-use conversion and habitat fragmentation, and to a lesser degree by forest management practices, and it is especially vulnerable to sedimentation (Southern Appalachian Species Viability Project 2002 in NatureServe 2014). Potential habitat destruction through disruption of hydrologic regime, residential construction, and road building (NatureServe 2014).

The species is sensitive to changes in its hydrological regime such as drainage or prolonged flooding, making it susceptible to road construction, drainage or infilling (for residential development) and logging, all of which are real plausible threats to the species at least in Canada (COSEWIC 2004). The species and its bog/fen habitat are also threatened in Canada by peat mining, pollution (oil and gas) from boats and cars, climate change and cranberry growing (Environment Canada and Parks Canada Agency 2010).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
In New Jersey many occurrences are protected from development, where they occur in Natural or Preservation Areas within State Forests, however, the species appears less well-protected outside New Jersey (NatureServe 2014).

None of the sites in Canada fall within a protected area, 17 sites are on private land and eight on state owned land. The species is is listed under the Nova Scotia Endangered Species Act (Vulnerable) and therefore as a “species at risk” requires a management plan within three years of designation (see Environment Canada and Parks Canada Agency 2010), however, destroying either the plants themselves or their habitat is not illegal (COSEWIC 2004). The species is also listed on the Canadian Species at Risk Act (SARA) on Schedule 1/Annexe 1 Status: SC (2005), by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) as Special Concern (2004). More information on the species recent (post 2004) population and habitat trends and status is needed.
