It is considered to be an abundant plant with a large and stable population. This species currently does not have survival problems. The many fertile collections suggest that there are still a reasonable number of healthy populations.

This species has been recorded from disturbed areas without any survival problem. In fact, this species is not experiencing any major threats and no significant future threats have been identified. It is not considered to be significantly impacted by habitat loss.

This species was asssessed as Near Threatened in the Red List of the Mexican Cloud Forest Trees (González-Espinosa et al. 2011). Juglans mollis occurs in the following protected areas: Biosphere Reserve "Barranca de Metztitlán" (Hidalgo), National Park "Los Mármoles" (Hidalgo), Biosphere Reserve "Sierra Gorda" (Querétaro), Biosphere Reserve "El Cielo" (Tamaulipas). The species is not known from any ex situ collections (BGCI 2020).
