État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
The number of individuals of Hyphaene petersiana is not known, but many herbarium specimens have been collected from many countries across its very large geographic range. This palm is reported to be common throughout the Zambesi Region (Stauffer et al. 2014). In Tanzania, the species can be observed in the shores of the lakes Manyara and Eyasi, forming dense subpopulations (Stauffer and Ouattara 2017).

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
There are no major threats to H. petersiana across its very large distribution range. However this species is facing local threats in some countries, such as South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botwana. In southern Zimbabwe, the palm was reported to be threatened by intensive harvesting of leaves for basket weaving (Dijkman 1999). In the north-western Botswana, the commercial exploitation of leaves for basket weaving apparently decimated palm subpopulations in the areas surrounding many villages during the 1970s and 1980s (Cunningham and Milton 1987). According to Kgathi et al. (2005), these palms are even more scarce than they had been in the 1980s. Due to the absence of protection measures for the palm, we infer that many subpopulations are likely to have continued to decline in Bostwana, in the Okavango Delta and also in central Tanzania (F. Stauffer pers. comm. 2017).
