The number of individuals of this species is not known and data about the population trends is not available. Important stands have been reported in Ghana, in the Volta Region (Ouattara et al. 2015) in Gabon, in the Loango National Park, and in Congo (A. Cosiaux pers. obs. 2015). However, the regeneration of the uneven aged stands are reported to be somewhat limited in Gabon (Valkenburg and Dransfield 2004), and in Ghana, the regeneration of sub-populations is reported to be highly limited because of cultivation practices (Ouattara et al. 2015).

Hyphaene guineensis appears to be locally threatened by agricultural activities. In the south east of Ghana, Togo and Benin the species is found in the coastal savanna, where almost all the lands are used for agriculture. Although the establishment of fields does not threaten the adult palms, the seedlings and juveniles are highly damaged by clearing and burning before each growing season (Michon 2017, Ouattara et al. 2015). Thus, the rate of regeneration in these places is reported to be very low, which may affect the future of these H. guineensis stands. This palm may also be locally threatened by the expansion of urban areas of coastal cities like Pointe-Noire. In spite of these local threats, the species appears not to be threatened at a global scale.

The species is only known to occur in one protected area, the Loango National Park in Gabon (Van Valkenburg and Dransfield 2004). It is also present in two ex situ conservation collections (BGCI 2016).
