État de la populationExpert

There are no population records currently available for Heterospathe scitula. The uncertainty in population size, can be addressed by further inventories and documentation. Moreover, with the continuous effect of shifting agriculture and urbanization in its locations, there is an expected continuing decline in its population.

Description complète des menacesExpert
Aside from its restricted occurrence, natural habitat loss is one of the threats being faced by the species with shifting agriculture and urbanization as some of the major contributors. This was supported by 2019 Global Forest Watch Analysis where almost 27,000 hectares of tree cover was lost from its distribution from 2001 to 2018. This is predicted to be continuing into the future.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert

One known conservation management strategy being employed for Heterospathe scitula is its cultivation in the Makiling Botanic Garden in Laguna which can be considered as ex situ conservation of the species (Fernando et al. 2009). The species was also included in the DAO 2017-11 or the Updated National List of Threatened Species in the Philippines assessed as Critically Endangered (DENR 2017). Through this administrative order pursuant to Republic Act no. 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001 illegal and excessive tampering of the species from its natural habitats together with other species specified therein are prohibited. Its natural occurrence in Bicol Natural Park, an officially designated protected area, also aids the population in in situ conservation. This area is protected by law against degradation and mandatory conservation is a prerequisite. However, the lack of strict protection mechanism as proven by the recent decline in local areas and species range.
