État de la populationExpert

Currently, there are no specific records pertaining to Heterospathe dransfieldii's population size due to the lack of surveys and research documentations for the species. However, its very restricted occurrence in one location may indicate the rarity of the species in the wild. There is an inferred decline in remaining population due to the continuous tree cover loss from its natural habitat caused by expansion of agricultural land areas and timber harvesting activities both for subsistence and trade purposes (GFW 2019).

Description complète des menacesExpert
Habitat loss is one of the main threats being faced by Heterospathe dransfieldii. This is supported by the 10,500 hectares of tree cover loss from the whole Municipality of Puerto Princesa from 2001 and 2018 (GFW 2019). This is primarily induced by logging operations (both small-scale and large-scale) for subsistence and trade purposes and the expansion of agricultural sites that are commonly subject to unsustainable farming practices.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert

The species is included in the DAO 2017-11 or the Updated National List of Threatened Species in the Philippines assessed as Endangered (DENR 2017). Through this administrative order pursuant to Republic Act no. 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001 illegal and excessive tampering of the species from its natural habitats together with other species specified therein are inhibited. Its unauthorized utilization, trade, and disturbances made in its natural habitats are punishable by the law. The species was also found to be present in an identified Philippine Key Biodiversity area, in Victoria and Anepahan Ranges in Palawan. Though these areas are not officially protected by any implementing legislation, they are considered as top priority conservation areas in the country where site-scale conservation efforts would be the present for the species and habitat protections (FPE 2020).
