This species has been described as locally abundant and is reported to be a conspicuous component of the vegetation at the type locality and to form large populations in the region (Burt-Utley and Utley 1988)

Agriculture, cattle farming, road opening and illegal trade of species (e.g., orchids, cacti) are the main threats to the Balsas dry forests ecoregion (Olson et al. 2001). The areas where the species has been collected appear to have been extensively converted and altered. This species has long been used in folk medicine, steam row, as a treatment for diabetes (hypoglycaemic). Other Hechtia species (e.g., Hechtia montana) have been eaten for centuries by local Indians populations (Felger 2000, Andrade-Cetto and Heinrich 2005). The taxon may also be collected for ornamental purposes and/or the horticultural trade. The impacts of extraction on the population are unknown.

There are no known conservation measures specifically for this species, and the species is not currently known to occur within the protected areas network. Samples of seed should be collected and stored as an ex situ conservation measure. Hechtia is a poorly known genus and because of dioicy and sexual dimorphism for inflorescence and floral characters, species are very difficult to identify. Surveys should be carried out in the region of the type collection and historical sites to determine the current range and size of the population.
