There is very little information about this species, which is known only from herbarium specimens. In 1970, the Panama population was considered to be a possible relict (den Hartog 1970). Field surveys looking for the population in 2009 found no seagrasses around Taboga Island in Panama (A. Prathep pers. comm. 2009). Additional thorough surveys and searches along the Pacific coast of Panama are needed to determine the current status of Halodule ciliata, as this species may be extinct.
