The species has been described in recent collections as very abundant in Anzuay and in Podocarpus National Park in Ecuador. The species is also reported to grow in dense masses (Manzanares et al. 5072)

Lower elevations in the region have suffered major habitat loss due to logging, human settlement, agriculture, and grazing. Threats are reduced at higher elevations, which are less accessible but threat are increasing (Klein 2001). The impact of anthropogenic disturbance on the population of this species is unknown. Tropical montane forests are especially sensitive to atmospheric climate change and likely to be the most affected. Predicted increase in dry seasons, drought and reduction in cloud formation patterns are expected to cause the replacement of many of the narrow altitude range cloud forests by lower altitude ecosystems, as well as the expulsion of peak residing cloud forests into extinction. How this may affect the population of this species is currently unknown.

There are no known conservation measures specifically for this species, however it is known to occur within the protected areas network. Sample of seed should be collected and stored as an ex situ conservation measure. The species has been recently assessed as Least Concern, in Columbia, in 2003 (Garcia and Galeano 2006). Levels of harvesting in the wild should be investigated. The population should be monitored at regular interval to detect any change in the population dynamics.
