In the original publication from 1893 (Ridley 1893) the species was abundant in the forests around Kota Glanggi, Pulau Tawar and around Tahan. Habitat degradation suggests that the population size is declining.

Approximately 30% of the tree cover within the extent of occurrence (EOO) was lost between 2000 and 2018 (GFW 2019). Forests of Sumatra are under continuous threat (WWF 2019) and Indonesia and Malaysia are the largest producers of palm oil, being one of the reasons natural habitat is converted (Theo 2002).

This species has not been recorded by BGCI (2019) to be grown ex situ. Some collections were made in protected areas such as Khao Soi Dao Wildlife Sanctuary and Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary in which subpopulations may be under a level of protection (Protected Planet 2019).
