Forests of Sumatra are under continuous threat (WWF 2019). Malaysia is with Indonesia the largest producer of palm oil, for which natural habitat is converted (Theo 2002).

According to BGCI (2019) this species is grown in four ex situ sites. Some individuals have been found in protected areas such as Patrimoine des forêts tropicales ombrophiles de Sumatra (World Heritage Site) and Arau Hilir dan Air Terusan Wildlife Reserve (Protected Planet 2019, ZRC 2019).
