The major threats to this species are deforestation and habitat destruction through conversion to agriculture and plantations, especially due to the increasing pineapple plantations in the northern zone of Costa Rica.

This species is known from several protected areas; in Nicaragua, from Reserva de la Biosfera Salaya and Cerro Saslaya; in Costa Rica, from Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Barra del Colorado, Parque Nacional Tortuguero, Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Dr. Archie Carr, Reserva Biológica La Tirimbina, Estación Biológica La Selva, Reserva Forestal Río Pacuare, Reserva Biológica Hitoy Cerere, Reserva Forestal Golfo Dulce, Parque Nacional Piedras Blancas, Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Golfito, Parque Internacional La Amistad; and in Panama, from Reserva Forestal de Fortuna, Área Silvestre Corregimiento de Narganá.
