État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
The species is clonal, sterile, flowers very irregularly in normal conditions, and breeds only by bulbils at juvenile and immature stages, hence it is not possible to define the number of mature individuals, and there is no information on overall population size. However there is an overall decline in the number of individual plants, primarily in the lowland populations in France where the main driver of decline is urbanisation. The single known montane population in France declined by more than 90% between 1990 and 2000 for unknown reasons (possibly Winter drought) and has not fully regenerated since then.

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
Because of the extremely small size of its sub-populations and the lack of long-distance dispersal, the species is threatened by the overgrazing in open areas, the closure of vegetation elsewhere, and environmental degradation by building in some localities. The montane populations in Italy are generally considered less impacted by threats.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
The species is implicitly protected in France since it was confused with Gagea bohemica (Zauschn.) Schultes & Schultes f. at the time of the establishment of the lists. The species has been assessed as Vulnerable (VU B2ab(iii)) in the regional Red List of Provence-Alpes-Côtes-d’Azur (Noble et al. 2015). It has also been assessed as VU nationally (as Gagea x luberonensis; UICN France et al. 2012). There is a need for research to confirm the distribution, and for conservation actions to protect and manage its habitat.
