The species is clonal and sterile, flowers very sporadically or not at all, and breeds only by bulbils at juvenile and immature stages. Because of the short lifetime of the bulb and the irregular germination of bulbils, the populations can fluctuate normally by a factor 1 to 1,000, depending on years. Because of the low flowering rate, the number of flowering plants does not give a good estimation of the real number of plants in the populations. Considering the individuals available for multiplication (1-5 years), most of populations exceed 1,000 plants in the best years.
The overall population trend is considered to be stable, however at least in France, some populations seem to have seriously declined in the last decades (J.-M. Tison pers. comm. 2016).
