The species is usually in good condition in semi-arid steppes without obvious threats. However, a disease has been noted in marginal populations in Morocco, close to cultivated fields: the plants are attacked by a fungal agent (smut) which often leads to death. This pathology, which occurs in cultivation too, is very likely a secondary effect of nitrate pollution and could represent a long-term threat.
