The population trend is declining.
The species is clonal, sterile and multiplies only by bulbils at juvenile and immature stages: according to this, “reproductive” individuals can be numerous (> 1,000 in the largest subpopulations). However, the species flowers very rarely, often not at all: according to this, “mature” individuals are very few or none, depending on years.

The plant is threatened by tourism and urbanization in all its areas except the Camargue and Marettimo Island. Its main area in France (Nerthe, likely more than 30% of its entire world population) is directly affected by a large urbanization project, despite the presence of several protected species.

The plant is legally protected in France as included in “Gagea granatellii” in the sense of the law. It is listed as VU in Provence-Alpes-Cotes d’Azur (France; Noble et al. 2015), CR in Apulia and VU in Sicily (Italy). The species is in need of further research to confirm its distribution, and conservation actions to protect its habitat.
