Fosterella vasquezii

At present, there are no known ongoing threats towards the small population of F. vasquezii, likely due to the protection provided by the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park. Scoping for potential mineral deposits has already started but no mining activities are currently being undertaken (SERGEOMIN 2016). Rock crystal, copper, clay, pyrite and kaolinite deposits have been recorded inside the national park boundaries (SERGEOMIN 2016). Collection for the ornamental plant trade has been identified as a threat to wild bromeliad populations (Negrelle et al. 2012), but no there is no evidence at present to suggest that F. vasquezii is a targeted species. Human disturbance is concentrated along the road networks within the park boundaries providing access for timber production outside of the national park (Ibisch et al. 1995). Managed forest reserves, local indigenous communities, cattle ranches and areas of urban expansion surround the national park and any further future development within these areas may have an adverse effect on the flora of this ecoregion (Killeen et al. 2003).

Continued protection via the National Park status of the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park should help protect this species into the future. Mining, road development and other planned activities within the national park need to consider rare and endemic species in the area within their development plans. Specific habitat management or protection should be implemented (M. Mendoza pers. comm. 2020). Future collections should be conducted to improve scientific knowledge regarding the geographic distribution of this species.
