The plant is a widespread species and its population size is presumably large. There are 24 collections for this species, distributed in five (Mali, Senegal, Siera Leone, Burkina Faso and Guinea) out of the nine countries of occurrence for this species. The number of collections is considered small due to low collecting effort. Although some of the collections are old, there is no evidence to suggest that the species is no longer extant at these sites.

Considering the ecology of this species (marshes, swamps and shallow water), likely threats to this species include expansion of human settlements and agriculture, related pollution and severe drought linked to climate change. However, these are not thought to represent major threats to the species.
